printer issue: “print processor does not exist.”

I’m trying to add the Grad College’s HP CLJ 2550n to printers. It goes OK until the end, where I’m uploading the Signed 200/XP/2003 drivers. I get an error “Unable to install printer. The print processor does not exist.”

Googling give a few helpful links:

An MS KB article with a hotfix:

However, we encountered this previously, and I thought we applied the patch. I will check the servers and try again before attempting any of the workarounds below.

Another migration

Michael and I migrated the CESS Dean’s office from Gemini to AD yesterday, with help from Andrew and Phil. There are a few major issues (Mac Client, NetBIOS wierdness, Shared area planning) and some minor ones (offline files sync’ing and folder redirection).

We are scheduled to meet with HR today, Accounting tomorrow, and DAR on Monday.

Deb and Rob in CHWB are blasting through the system prep-work for migration. I’m off to provide assistance.

Four more systems done

Together, ckeefe and I re-installed Windows XP with SP on four GX270s. The systems are domain-joined and have the Novell client installed. (performance degraded noticably). I removed the DPMS component and configured their printers via printers. I installed Thunderbird, FireFox, and GAIM as well. Carol is going to install MS Office (sans Outlook), Oracle Calendar, BlueZone, and whatever else they need.

Progress is slow

Tuesday morning, I made a short list of goals. Here’s how they stand:

scheduled time to work on provisioning scripts

I was able to develop some user-interface improvements, and pull together two component scripts. I still need to pull in the third, and to provide more error-checking.

contact Sarah in Student Life regarding migration

I have scheduled a meeting for Monday morning; Sarah has confirmed.

create OTG groups in AD

I have created the three groups wvw requested, and asked whenwe can move forward with the migration of OTGServer from the UVMAD domain to CAMPUS.

learn how to set up a Mac to connect to AD with the AdmitMac client didn’t happen.
leave on time didn’t happen.
pick up book at borders also didn’t happen
got an email that their inventory had changed since I check for availibility; they sold their last copy. I’ll check again to see if it gets restocked. I want to use my homeschool discount with the gift certificate.

Tuesday

Spent the morning doing script development, walk-throughs with Phil. Made quite a bit of headway.

In the afternoon, I went with Greg to the Audit Services offices in Colchester to do an AD migration. Two PCs and a Mac. They have a rather low-bandwidth connection, so file-copies were slow. I spent the whole time with one PC; it refuses to install SAV 9. %^$! They now complain about printing with a watermark not working. I guess I’ll have to head out there today.

Wednesday

Worked with new colleague mcaha to bring CESS Dean’s Office systems up-to-date. This went relatively smoothly.

I finally got my butt to Aikido. It was a good class–lot’s of suwari-waza. Now I need some Advil.

In the afternoon, mcaha, Phil and I did the final migration for the Grad College.

I wasn’t in my office much at all, Wednesday. I checked email at home last night, and saw that Audit Services shared area hadn’t been copied from Gemini to Files. I started up a RDP session and got the copy underway. This morning, I checked the robocoy log and everything copied OK. Made ACEs for the audit services group.

It’s about 9:30 am; I guess I’ll go head out to audit services.

Tuesday goals

  • scheduled time to work on provisioning scripts
  • contact Sarah in Student Life regarding migration
  • create OTG groups in AD
  • learn how to set up a Mac to connect to AD with the AdmitMac client
  • leave on time
  • pick up book at borders

Monday, Monday

I met with ccowie, aquinn from the CESS Dean’s Office regarding planning and prep for their migration from Gemini to ADWindows. On Wednesday, I’ll be working with mcaha on bringing their systems into compliance (SPs, Hotfixes, virus protection).

I helped with another issue for mlowder; she had apparently created some local folders with Eudora, which she thought were on the imap server. So when her system was re-images, they were lost. Bad Eudora! I could say untrained user, which would be accurate, but IMAP support in Eudora is so clunky that it would be an easy mistake to create local folders.

Updated forms in the for the NextStep program.

Conference call with a group at a Kentucky University that is in the process of deploying Active Directory to replace their existing Novell infrastructure. Our two groups have approached the process in very similar ways. They pointed out the moveuser.exe tool, which accomplishes several steps we’ve been doing by hand.

Greg, Phil, and I then developed a list of decision point that we need to address very soon.

Operation migration

I’ve spent most of the yesterday and today working with Greg to migrate their workstations in the Graduate College from Gemini to AD. There are eight workstations to be migrated; we’ve done six. I’m hoping to get another done this afternoon, but I need to leave on time!

Some of the issues making this complicated include:

  1. the office uses OTGserver for document imaging
  2. the graduate college was left in the grad.sis.uvm context, rather than getting fully migrated to users.uvm
  3. several users are logging into departmental accounts, rather than individual accounts
  4. various scumware and even a filesharing app
  5. I’ve been installing FireFox and Thunderbird and performing a migration from Eudora…
  6. there are some systems that are multi-user; formerly, these used a departmental account, but our new model prefers that workstudy students use their own NetIDs and log in individually. But this may have its own limitations.

Apparently, I need to do a better job of interrogating people and systems before starting a migration.

Journalist James Fallows

spoke on Fresh Air on Tuesday , September 28, 2004 :

Fallows is the national correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly. His latest article in the Atlantic is “Bush’s Lost Year.” Fallows has written seven books, including Breaking the News: How the Media Undermine American Democracy, and is a commentator on National Public Radio. His articles have appeared in The Industry Standard, Slate, The New York Times Magazine and other publications.

He descibed in a very clear manner the way President Bush and his administration have mismanaged the war in Iraq.

Following this interview, Lloyd Schwartz profiled German Countertenor Andreas Scholl. Simply beautiful…

Meetings, meetings

Participated in the ERP Architecture Assessment today, discussing client and developer system requirements and configuration, some security and network topics, and a brief foray into directory services.

I checked in with the graduate college; dbouchar has been applying SP4 /SP2 to the workstations.

To do:

  • Copy julia’s gemini H: to files
  • provision ERP consultant accounts
  • respond to dpratt re demo of new services

Fun with migration

Yesterday (Monday, Sep 27)
I completed the data migration of the FAB shared area from Gemini to Files. It took 1 hr, 30 min to transfer 2.5 GB of data using robocopy. That’s crappy.

I created three installation CDs for Windows XP Pro with SP2 slipstreamed. I used them successfully to rebuild a system in accounting.

I spent most of the day working in a somewhat disorganized way to rebuild three buggy systems in accounting. Two are IBM systems. After the OS/driver reinstallation, I joined the systems to the domain and set them up to use their domain accounts rather than local accounts. This will make the eventual departmental migration from Novell to AD easier.

There was an accidental loss of data when a user’s addressbook and bookmarks weren’t backed up prior to rebuild.

All-in-all, it took about 4.5 hours to build these three system.

Today:
Started the day with some clean-up from the migration last night.

Castor abended; Greg found a KB article and made a config file adjustment.

Generated some stats regarding current Gemini usage: 785 account have a Last Login date of July 1, 2004, or after.

Met with Dean and Greg to discuss migration project management and planning.

I sent email to folks in a few departments to discuss mgration plans:

  • Tentatively planning to migrate Grad College on Thursday.
  • Email to aquinn and ccowie to discuss CESS migration
  • phonemail to swales and message for dbrauer regarding LGBTQA services and Diversity and Equity
  • Email to dcomey and jhoppenj regarding Student Life

Priority: need to work on these provisioning scripts.
