Weekend update: healing, friends, and play

So it turned out that BW had an infection. After a day of antibiotics, she was almost back to her self, again. Thank goodness. We were really missing our chipper, wise-crackin’ CraftyMomma.

On Saturday evening, we hosted our friends, LadyHeron and TheaterGeek. We had a little cookout, and then attempted to play a 5-player game of Settlers of Catan. Now, I really like Settlers, but with the expansion, it moves kind of slowly. LadyHeron and BW bailed after giving it a good effort, and even NatureBoy dropped out after a couple more turns.

Then we guys chatted and the women-folk chatted, and NB bounced between us. I then offered to show TG an episode of Avatar: the Last Airbender, which he hadn’t seen. We ended-up seeing two episodes, with the whole party watching most of the second. What can I say? It’s a great show.

On Sunday, bright and early, NB and I played a game of Stratego, which BW had snagged at a yard sale recently. It came right down to the last handful of pieces on either side, but I managed to prevail even with just one cup of tea. (I said it was early. I’m lucky I got to pee, first!)

BW and I ran a couple quick errands, then NB and I played a game of Games Workshop’s Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game.

Now I picked up this book on sale at the friendly local gaming store a couple years ago because it has some decent instructions for painting miniatures and creating terrain. NatureBoy decided he wanted to try the game itself, though.

Since we didn’t have any of the minis, we made do with some quick paper tokens. Here you can see my Men of Gondor hopelessly outnumbered.

And here’s a Giant Eagle’s eye view of the Battlefield. That’s a folded green wool blanket with some encyclopedias tucked underneath, and some nicely weatheres pop tart box ruins.

It was nice to play a miniatures game without a grid. Most of my miniatures gaming has been with D&D minis. And the system was pretty straight-forward; we skipped the advanced rules for this first skirmish. We’ll have to see if the interest continues.

While we played, BW was busy assembling piles of provisions. She and NB are in Maine visiting her sister for the week. So I have the place all to my self. Well, except for the three cats. …and four guinea pigs. …and fish.

Saving AndrΓ©

Beloved Wife IM-ed me today that, among the several errands that she and NatureBoy will be running, they will be stopping in to the Burlington Price Chopper to see André for themselves.

UPDATE: André was flown to Boston yesterday. NB was elated. πŸ™‚

Wisdom Teeth and D&D

Beloved Wife is having all her wisdom teeth extracted this morning. She’s been pretty anxious, but she’s resigned to her fate. I’m off from work today to tend to her.

Of course, NatureBoy has his own designs on today and tomorrow. Since BW will be out of commission for a while, he’s been hard at work on a D&D campaign, complete with props. I expect we’ll be playing this afternoon, and probably some tomorrow.

We had a very subdued Lammas; we had some freshly-picked grape tomatoes with supper, and I played several hands of cards with NatureBoy. Lately, I just haven’t had the inspiration to do elaborate ritual.

Well, gotta get ready to go to the oral surgeon.

Yoga info via Lifehacker

I saw a couple of Yoga-related items on Lifehacker, recently. The one that first caught my eye is program in Canada that has developed yoga sequences to perform at your desk.

The other is a free yoga video from www.yogatoday.com. I’ve grabbed a couple of them to preview. I’m especially looking forward to the one on Thighs and Hamstrings; I can’t even bend 90 degrees at the waist with straight legs. [sigh]

Vacation – Last Day

I go back to work tomorrow. I’ve really enjoyed this time off. We’ve done a bunch of stuff as a family, and I’ve had one-on-one time with both BW and NatureBoy. We’ve spent time outdoors, enjoying the fleetingly short but beautiful Vermont summer. I’ve gotten in a respectable amount of gaming. And I’ve spent time with friends. Can’t ask for much more than that. πŸ™‚

Yesterday morning, NB and I played another round of Settlers of Catan. We learned a few more things and had a good time (NB won). In the evening, we had a barbecue with a gaming friend and his wife. When he was visiting a couple weeks ago, he had expressed appreciation for the boffer swords that NB and I had made. I offered for him to come over and participate in a little swordtag sparring and for us to get a chance to meet his spouse.

We had a great time! My friend, whom I now dub TheaterGeek (TG) sparred with me and NatureBoy. We adults had a nice post-dinner chat while NB spent some quality time with his GameCube. Then TG and I did a little grup boffer sword sparring. It was great fun — and a good work-out. The GeekWive’s were making noises about kitting together; this can only be good. We’ll have to have have them over again, soon.

Today, we played a game of Settlers of Catan as a family. I finally won a game 😎 and, more importantly, BW said she really enjoyed the game. We ran a couple errands after lunch, and BW and I watched a few more Battlestar Galactica episodes — the Pegasus episodes were very harsh.

Now, as we prep for the week, I realize that I’m looking forward to going back to work. But I’m really greatful for the wonderful time off I’ve had with family and friends. Now, we are going to go roast some marshmallows on the night of the Full Moon.

Blessed Be.

Vacation – Great Escape

I’m well into my summer vacation. My sister-in-law is visiting from Maine, too, and on Friday, we took a trip to the Great Escape. DW, Goddess of planning and logistics, had acquired discounted tickets via AAA, and packed lunch, water, and enough snacks for an arctic expedition (No, no! I’m not complaining!). It took about 2:50 to get there, but we really wanted to have fun in the water park and enjoy a few rides.

A couple colleagues had mentioned that the park had been advertising a new ride, called the Tornado, which was very cool. NatureBoy, though, decided that he wasn’t interested in any “scary rides,” which ended-up including pretty-much everything the we grown-ups wanted to try. So we ended-up taking turns supervising him at the long floaty river, the wave pool and the Paul Bunyan Bucket Brigade.

I got to go on the Tornado twice, once with SiL and once with DW. With SiL, I went down the first drop backwards, but I got to see how steep it is when I went with DW. It was a lot of fun, but pretty short. At least the line moved really quickly. I went with SiL to a couple of the tube rides (skip the black cobra; yawn), and then went with NatureBoy to the wave pool. DW and her sister took the opportunity to go try the the Comet. After a while, the wave pool closed for a break, and NB headed to the Bucket Brigade. He stood on the structure during the first bucket dump, and we stood under the cascade for the next one. πŸ™‚

DW and SiL came back from their ride beaming, and DW asked me to go on it with her. It started raining while I was changing, but it was a brief shower. We took the ride, and I have to admit that I really don’t care for the old-fashioned roller coasters. The drops and rises were fun, but we were heaved and bumped and banged around so much that I too worried about keeping from getting hurt to enjoy the ride. Now, I did enjoy the Dueling Dragons at Universal’s Islands of Adventure that I went on during Microsoft Tech*Ed 2007 with a friend from BSAD.

We were hoping that we’d get a chance to go on the Alpine Bobsled, but it was closed because of the rain. NB wanted to ride the gondola, so I went with him. Then we headed home, exhausted.

All-in-all, I think I prefer the Whale’s Tale Water Park in Lincoln, NH. It’s just a water park (i.e., no roller coasters), but we got to do the rides many more times, there weren’t lines waiting for tubes, and the place was just friendlier and at a more reasonable scale.

Family Aikido

I started practicing Aikido at Vermont Aikido in the Fall of 1992. After a couple years, I took a long break, then started again at another dojo, Aikido of Champlain Valley. I studied there for a number of years, and then fell off the wagon again.

Yesterday, DW attended her first Aikido class at Vermont Aikido. She likes the dojo, the instructors and the other Aikidoka, and is planning to join and keep training. I will be joining and practicing, again, too.

I’m so excited; she was talking about getting some kind of mats so we can practice at home. This is so much better than the square dancing and tennis lessons that had been mentioned previously. (pheww!)
